
Assistant Professor Dr. Napisa Waitoolkiat, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Naresuan University, along with Lecturer Kridsana Chotisut from the ASEAN Community Studies Center, paid respects to Dr. Cynthia Maung (Dr. Cynthiakah) in recognition of her contributions to ASEAN Studies. She was awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree from Naresuan University during the graduation ceremony on 11 March 2025, presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
Dr. Cynthia Maung, a Myanmar-born physician, founded the Mae Tao Clinic in Mae Sot, Tak Province, to provide medical care for refugees and migrant workers from Myanmar. For decades, she has dedicated herself to public health services for vulnerable populations, earning the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 2002 and numerous international accolades for her humanitarian and human rights work.
To commemorate this occasion, the Faculty of Social Sciences presented a commemorative gift, hosted a faculty tour for Dr. Cynthia Maung, and participated in a group photo with her and the Mae Tao Clinic team.
The conferral of this honorary degree garnered significant international media attention. BBC Burmese reported on the event, while the Karen Information Center (KIC) shared a special video feature on social media, highlighting the crucial role of Mae Tao Clinic in cross-border healthcare.
